Sign calling city 'God's country' at center of legal dispute

A South Texas city proclaimed themselves "God's country" and it's not sitting well with the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

The sign says, "This is God's country, please don't drive through it like hell." It's been the city's slogan since the 1930s, but now two Texans have complained. They're with the Freedom from Religion Foundation, and they call the city's sign inappropriate.

Most locals disagree.

"It's kind of a welcome sign. It also kind of gives them an idea of what kind of community we have," said Hondo, Texas, Mayor James Danner. "That's part of us, that's part of our community.

"If you don't like it, don't read it."

The group has asked the mayor to take the sign down, but he says he'd be run out of town if he did that, and he has no plans to change it.
