Catastrophic flooding in Texas town north of I-10

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Unprecedented and catastrophic flooding is occurring along the Sabine River putting the town of Deweyville, Texas under water. The higher water mark of just over 33' breaks the record established in May of 1884. This is the aftermath from the 18-20" of rain that fell upstream last week in east Texas and Louisiana.

West side of I-10 closed at Louisiana border

Water releases from Toledo Bend Dam are largely responsible for the flooding downstream along the Sabine River. Those flood waters are now creeping up along I-10, prompting TxDot to close the interstate at the Louisiana border until further notice.

Flooding is expected to worsen in the city of Orange, Texas, rising to the second highest level on record and the highest ever for river flooding due to rains upstream. The record water level in Orange was established during Hurricane Ike in 2008 as storm surge water rushed in from the Gulf of Mexico.

Major flooding in both Deweyville and Orange is expected to continue through the weekend.
