HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A young boy has died after being hit by an armored car in northeast Houston.
It happened around 11:50am at Lorraine and Elysian. HPD says a boy, his mother and another adult were crossing the street when they were hit. They didn't have the green light to cross, and police say they failed to yield to traffic.
At the same time, investigators say, a white Chevy armored van was turning northbound onto Elysian, which is a one-way street. They say that driver ran the red light.
The boy, just six years old, was rushed to LBJ Hospital, where he died.
Those who live nearby say they are stunned. Area resident Sonia Martinez built a small memorial.
"We were just barely coming in from the store. I just bought that for the thought that counts," she said.
The child's 31-year-old mother was also injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The van, which is operated by Dunbar Armored Incorporated, remained at the scene more than 3 hours after the incident. The driver was sitting in the front seat.
Our calls for comment there have not yet been returned.
HPD says no arrest has been made and no charges have been filed, though the investigation continues.
