Astros host Orioles in 2014 Civil Rights game

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Astros take on the Orioles Friday night in the 8th annual Civil Rights Game.

The game is a two day event that honors Jackie Robinson's legacy and the adversities we still face today in civil rights. But it is much more than a baseball game. It's a celebration of civil rights progress and a challenge to do much more in the future.

There were a series of events Friday leading up to the game including the annual Beacon Awards. The ceremony celebrates and honors those who have pushed and fought for civil rights.

Friday's luncheon honored visionaries and pioneers in civil rights, like NFL hall of famer Jim Brown, rock and roll hall of famer Berry Gordy and late best selling author Maya Angelou.

"We have to understand the people that made it possible for us to be where we are today," said hall of famer Frank Robinson. "We have to understand we still have a lot of work to do, and continue to take the cause forward, and conduct ourselves in a matter that is respectful."

"I love the fact that the players are wearing negro league uniforms tonight, said Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson. "It is important for us to look back but its very important that we move forward."

Tonight the Astros will be wearing of the uniforms of the Houston Eagles. They were the only negro league team ever to play from Texas. The Orioles will be wearing the Baltimore Elite Giants uniforms.
