HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A 3-year-old boy was shot in the head in northwest Harris County, according to Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department.

Harris County Precinct 5 Captain Romeo Chapa tells us they believe the child's parents have a concealed handgun permit and that the child may have found the gun and accidentally shot himself.

The shooting happened in the 7400 block of Betannia at Elmont around 12:30pm. An adult was in the house at the time of the shooting, authorities say.

Cy-Fair Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesperson says the boy was found by his mother who called 911.

The child was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

An investigator tells Eyewitness News the victim's mom and a child are being questioned at the scene.

The boy is in critical condition.
