Astros' Carlos Beltran raises $1.3M for Puerto Rico disaster relief after Hurricane Maria
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston Astros outfielder Carlos Beltran has raised more than $1.3 million for Puerto Rico disaster relief.
Beltran launched the crowdfunding campaign for his native Puerto Rico, which was battered by Hurricane Maria.
The athlete and his wife kicked in $1 million of their own money last week.
The campaign has raised more than $311,000 in small donations.
"The situation is critical. I saw the action, the compassion in Texas. I saw the same action, the same compassion in Florida. Right now, I'm looking for the same action, the same compassion for the people of Puerto Rico," Beltran said.

On Wednesday, the Astros announced they were partnering with several businesses and the city of Houston to send 240,000 pounds of relief supplies to the storm-torn U.S. territory.
Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, catcher Juan Centeno, bench coach Alex Cora and translator Alex Cintron are also from Puerto Rico.
