0.1 miles at center of Ft. Bend ISD bus dispute
The father of 2 FBISD children says he is being charged hundreds of dollars for his kids to take the same school bus other children on his same street are using for free

FORT BEND COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- The father of two Fort Bend ISD children says he is being charged hundreds of dollars for his kids to take the same school bus other children on his same street are allowed to use for free.

Bryan Coco and his family live in Sienna Plantation. His two youngest attend Schiff Elementary. He says FBISD is requiring him to pay $900 for his youngest boys to be able to ride the bus for the school year.

The district says its policy allows the school board to require payment of a reasonable fee for the service of a student who lives in "...within two miles of the school..." According to Google Maps, Coco and his family live 1.9 miles from the campus. We drove the route, however, and it registered as 2.1 miles from driveway to driveway.

Coco says in addition, the children who live on his street who get to use the bus for free must walk past his home to get to the corner where the bus picks them up. He wants to know why he is being charged when it wouldn't cost FBISD any additional expense to also include his children on that bus.

Coco admits he agreed to pay for the service last year, but claims that was before the other homes on his street were built and before FBISD revamped its bus routes as a result.

FBISD will not comment other than to say it is "checking into the issue" and that it will have an answer for Coco next week.
