Honorary JROTC cadet with autism gives life lesson, presents colors at game

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A 15-year-old at Summer Creek High School is determined to not let autism get in the way of his passion of participating in something he believes in.

Jalen Austin, a freshman, was the center of attention as he led his JROTC comrades in his honorary role.

"He is such a great patriot, he loves his country, loves his colors. And its amazing to learn from him," Breanna Walkins said.

On Thursday night, Jalen was chosen to carry the flag.

"I carry the flag definitely and I get a little nervous but I will do my best," he said.

Jalen did do his best, making his family proud. He never missed a cue, was spot on and filled with pride.

"Words cannot express the pride my husband, myself and older son have for the accomplishments in his life," said his mom, Debra. "I feel like I want to cry."

Walkins says Jalen taught them respect and love for ROTC, the military and colors of the U.S.

Quite the lesson from an unassuming boy with autism.

"What do you always tell mom?" Debra asked.

"I'm a proud American boy," Jalen replied.
