Ex-cabbie gets life term for double killing

DALLAS, TX

A jury in Dallas on Thursday convicted 33-year-old Ladale Cubit of capital murder in the July 2011 fatal shootings. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty so Cubit gets an automatic life prison term.

The victims were 35-year-olds Rahim Merchant and Mehboob Pirani. Prosecutors say the men were gunned down outside Irving Mall by the driver of a gold cab.

The Dallas Morning News reports Cubit lived in the same apartment complex as Pirani but the prosecution never explained a motive for the gunfire.

Prosecutors say Cubit drove away after the killings, abandoned his taxi in Abilene and was later caught in Slaton, near Lubbock.
