A man has been arrested in a South Texas cockfighting investigation after he allegedly tried to reclaim more than 50 seized roosters.

San Antonio police on Monday arrested 64-year-old Jesus Jose Pena on a misdemeanor charge of cockfighting. Pena, who allegedly claimed to own the animals, was later freed on $1,600 bond.

Investigators say Pena on Jan. 17 allegedly tried to reclaim, from Animal Care Services, several dozen roosters removed days earlier from a relative's home. A warrant was later issued for Pena.

San Antonio police last week returned to the site, after getting a tip that cockfights had resumed, and seized 22 more roosters.

Texas laws make it illegal to possess birds meant for cockfighting and to attend a cockfight.
