Volunteers needed for HISD's dropouts walk

HISD is looking for enthusiastic volunteers ready to help get dropouts back into school by participating in the sixth annual "Reach Out to Dropouts" Walk on Saturday, September 12. Last year, more than 1400 volunteers made direct contact with 1053 students or parents about getting dropouts back into class right away. The day of the walk, 98 dropouts re-enrolled.Volunteers can sign up online by completing a Volunteer Registration form at HISD's website, www.houstonisd.org. The Reach Out to Dropouts Walk is part of "Expectation: GRADUATION," HISD's initiative program to help more students graduate from high school. HISD offers flexible schedules, online courses and credit-recovery programs to help returning students catch up on their school work so they can earn the credits required to graduate.

On September 12, volunteers will visit homes of students who have not shown up at their home schools by the end of the first week of school. The teams of visiting volunteers will include, at least, two community volunteers and two district-based volunteers. Teams will be equipped with students' names and addresses, maps, resource materials, and school contact information cards. Schools will be open for students wishing to re-enroll that day.

Last year's effort included HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra, Houston Mayor White and wife Andrea, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee, Councilmember Wanda Adams, Councilmember James Rodriguez, Representative Scott Hochberg, Councilmember Jarvis Johnson, HISD board members, hundreds of HISD teachers, counselors, administrators, business people, parents and other volunteers who walked the neighborhoods surrounding 23 HISD high schools.

Interested volunteers who have additional questions can contact the HISD Department of Student Engagement at 713-556-7017 or e-mail ROTD@houstonisd.org.
