The Digital Preservation Project initiated by Land Office staff in 2000 seeks to digitally scan all 35 million documents in the GLO Archives and convert them into electronic images.

The conservation process for these historic documents is a delicate and time-consuming one. For most maps, the treatment includes removal of surface dirt, water baths, deacidification, flattening, mending tears, reducing stains, removing old repair materials such as tape and varnish, and replacement of old backings with special Japanese Kozo paper.
