Plane collides with helicopter

We're told a student pilot was getting a lesson in the helicopter while a vintage airplane was giving air rides. The two aircrafts collided.

The damaged airplane wing and helicopter rotor sit where they landed, just a few feet where the tiny two-seater helicopter came crashing down to earth. It all happened around 2pm Saturday afternoon.

Officials said the vintage airplane was taking off from Weiser Air Park when its left wing struck the helicopter's rotor. The chopper fell 40 feet to the ground, while the plane was able to continue its takeoff.

"The plane did take off and had to circle back and land because of the damage to the wing," said Lt. Karl Pflughaupt of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department.

The chopper belongs to an aviation school called Anything Is Possible. Both the instructor and the student were rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The airplane pilot was not hurt.

The FAA will be investigating the mid-air collision. Other Pilots say it's an example of why communication is important at small airports.

"This is where the accidents happen here at the airport. Takeoff and landing. That's where all the people get hurt," said pilot Clifford Silveria.

We're told the airplane is not based out of Weiser and it is unclear whether it had radio communication.

There is no tower at Weiser Air Park to control traffic so pilots say it is up to them to use radio communication. However, there is no law that says they have to use it.
