Online retailer Amazon is set to open a new fulfillment center in Katy.

BROOKSHIRE, Texas (KTRK) -- Online megaretailer Amazon is set to open a new fulfillment center just west of Katy, a move that is expected to bring 1,000 jobs to the area.

The Houston Business Journal reports the company will open the facility on an 87-acre site near Woods Road and U.S. Highway 90. The warehouse will house fulfillment operations for larger-sized items like musical instruments, sports gear and electronics.

"We are thrilled to have a world-renowned company select our community for construction of its newest facility," Katy Area Economic Development Council president and CEO Lance LaCour said in a news release. "This a momentous day for Katy and further cements our position as a top destination for leading companies throughout the world. We are eager to work with Amazon moving forward."

Amazon already employs more than 10,000 Texans at existing facilities in Coppell, Haslet, Dallas, Fort Worth, Schertz and San Marcos, with additional facilities under construction in northwest Houston and Coppell.
