A deputy opened fire near an extended-stay motel in Montgomery County, injuring one person, the sheriff's office said on Thursday.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A deputy opened fire and killed a person near an extended-stay motel near Interstate 45 in Montgomery County.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened at 7:13 p.m. Thursday at 150 Valleywood Road.

MCSO said an individual was shot and transported to a local hospital, where the person later died.

An eyewitness shared cell phone video of first responders treating the man on the scene. Kenneth Knupfer described an escalating situation moments before the shooting.

"I hear yelling. I come outside looking, and I'm like, 'What's going on?'" Knupfer said. "He pulled a gun on a kid, multiple kids, and they go running into the building. He looked like he was ready to do something crazy. Next thing I hear (is) one shot from when the dude's running. I was outside at this point. He's running, and he drops to the ground instantly.

Knupfer said there were two gunshots. One came from the suspect, missing the deputy who returned fire.

The sheriff's office said no deputies were injured but has not elaborated on what led to the shooting or why the deputy was there in the first place.
