Sources: Patriots don't plan to add QB before game vs. Texans

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have no plans at this time to add another quarterback before Thursday's home game against the Houston Texans, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.

That leaves New England with one healthy quarterback, rookie Jacoby Brissett, on a short week of preparation.

Part of the Patriots' thinking could be that there simply isn't enough time to get a quarterback up to speed on such a quick turnaround [the Patriots don't have a quarterback on the practice squad], and it also isn't worth cutting another player on the roster in that situation.

Another line of thinking is that while it's a long shot, Jimmy Garoppolo could still dress for the game as a No. 2 emergency option Thursday and run a limited portion of the offense if needed. Garoppolo's right throwing shoulder has a sprained AC joint, according to sources, and the team hasn't ruled out hope that he could be an option Thursday.

Julian Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State before switching to receiver when the Patriots drafted him in 2009, would likely be the other emergency option.

After Garoppolo's injury Sunday, the possibility of the Patriots' signing another quarterback was widely discussed in media circles, but the early indications Monday were that the Patriots weren't thinking along the same lines.

"I'm not sure exactly what the situation is going to be," Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Monday on sports radio WEEI. "I think a lot of that will be determined later [Monday] relative to Jimmy's whole situation and what it's going to be. I'm sure if he can't play or back up, then we'll be going through that process [Monday]."

Later on WEEI, coach Bill Belichick said the team "possibly" will work out a free-agent quarterback.
