Harris County officials are hosting a roundtable discussion on a proposed designation that could save the Astrodome

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett is holding a roundtable discussion on the future of the Houston Astrodome today.

About 30 people, including representatives from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Houston Texans, and NRG Stadium, are attending the "Astrodome stakeholders' meeting."

One big topic -- historical designation.

The Texas Historical Commission has nominated the Astrodome as a state antiquities landmark. That nomination puts temporary protection over the Astrodome; county officials will have to file permits and get approval before beginning any project work.

An official vote on the designation is scheduled for July.

If the Astrodome is designated as historical, it still won't mean the dome can't be demolished or used for a different purpose. It would mean that county officials will need approval from the Texas Historical Commission before making any changes to the exterior or interior of the building.
