Authorities say robbery was the motive in a deadly shooting outside a motel parking lot in north Houston.

It happened at the America's Best Value Inn on the North Freeway just after 5am.

Authorities believe a man and a woman were followed into the motel parking lot by men on foot. At least three men ran onto the lot from the street. Police say a fourth suspect acted as lookout while the others approached the vehicle.

The three men were attempting to rob the couple when the woman in the car took off running. The man in the vehicle had his own gun and shot at the suspects. The suspects returned fire, shooting and killing him.

The suspects took the victim's gun and ran down the street. Police say they are reviewing surveillance video from the motel.

The victim hasn't been identified, but we're told he had spend the evening before with family, celebrating a relative's birthday.
