5 teens wounded in mysterious Channelview shooting

CHANNELVIEW, TX

Investigators say they were initially called to the 900 block of Ashland Boulevard near Elgin Street in Channelview after reports of a shooting around 2:30pm Sunday.

"I heard gunshots, like four or five gunshots, and that's when I got back in the house," neighbor Charles Palmer said.

When they arrived, they found a shooting victim lying in front of a home. He was taken to East Houston Regional Medical Center and then transported via Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Deputies then learned of four other shooting victims who showed up at the hospital in a bullet-ridden pickup truck.

One of those four teens is the 17-year-old son of Elma Flores.

"It's uncalled for," Flores said. "I never thought that it could happen to me and my son. He's in high school and he's my baby."

Flores' baby, Harris County Sheriff's deputies say, was at the scene on Ashland in a pickup with at least three others when they were shot. The driver, we're told, managed to drive all four victims straight to East Houston Regional Medical Center.

"There's no words that can explain," Flores said. "It's just that I wish that all of this would come to a stop."

Deputies said a shotgun was used in the shootings. They believe all five victims are connected, but they don't know how or why.

"They're all from the same event, which is here," HCSO Dep. Thomas Gilliland said, referring to the crime scene on Ashland. "But again, we're trying to figure out what happened exactly. Was it two groups of people or was it one group of people?"

Relatives tell us the victims were all teens, and most of them attend Channelview High School. At last check, all five of them were stable and some were being interviewed by investigators while family members waited nearby, praying.

"Keep them in your prayers," one victim's brother, Marshall Rodriguez, said. "If you all know them, keep them in your prayers. There's nothing we could do about the violence."
