One person dead in rollover wreck on Southwest Freeway

HOUSTON

Houston police say the driver of a black Chevrolet Aveo was traveling northbound on the Southwest Freeway near Fondren at around 6:30am when he noticed a metal swing set in the middle of the lane. The driver attempted to avoid the swing set, but struck it and then lost control of his vehicle.

The Aveo crossed over several lanes of traffic and struck the left rear of a silver Nissan Murano. The Murano rolled several times.

The 31-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The driver of the Aveo remained at the scene and there are no indications alcohol was factor in the accident.

No charges have been filed at this time as the investigation is continuing.

It took crews several hours to clear the wreck. All traffic was forced off the freeway at the South Gessner exit. Traffic was backed up for miles. The freeway reopened just after 10am.
