Day care van driver charged in wreck did not have license and is in country illegally

HOUSTON

During a court appearance Wednesday, prosecutors said the driver of the van did not have a license. Both the day care owner, Darryl Freeman, and the van's driver, Conception Coronado, appeared before a judge to hear the charges of injury to a child - criminal negligence, read against them.

Coronado is being held without bond because she is in the country illegally and did not have a license. She allegedly ran a red light July 9 in northwest Harris County and caused the crash.

The kids were injured because the van did not have enough safety belts, police say. At least eight of those kids should have been in booster seats, and some of the children were sharing seatbelts.

The children, between the ages of 6 and 12 years of age, were all released from the hospital the same day with no serious injuries.
