Couple saved by smoke detector

HOUSTON The fire started at a home on River Ridge near Needham in Montgomery County early Tuesday morning and burned for hours. The homeowners were saved by their smoke detector.

Sarah Ellis recalled, "The smoke alarm went off and woke me up, and I woke my husband up. I saw smoke coming from up the stairs and got him up, and we just ran out."

Firefighters tried to attack the flames from the inside, but they had to go into a defensive mode because of the water problem.

Nine tanker trucks were called to bring in water, because the nearest fire hydrant was a mile away. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
