Newborn left at SW Houston post office

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An infant was abandoned by his mother at local post office, and Child Protective Services is asking for the public's help to find her or the infant's relatives.

The male infant was discovered at around 9:20am at the Westbrae post office at 10910 South Gessner. He was wearing a white long-sleeve one-piece outfit and a Pampers diaper with the word 'Jesse' written in marker on it. The infant was left in a carseat with a black and red blanket with white dog bones and the word 'woof' on it.

"I was under the impression that she was going to take the baby to either a hospital or police station," the baby's relative, who did not want to be identified, told Eyewitness News Wednesday. "She told me that she could not take care of the baby."

According to the relative, the infant is two months old and is named Glen, not Jesse as written not the diaper found with the infant. The relative said the infant's mother has three other children and said she couldn't take care of the infant any longer.

Postal customers who found out about the news were furious.

"You don't have a little bit of god inside of you," said Omar Malacara.

"I know that there's a lot of people that love children that would love to have a child that they could adopt," said John.

Late Wednesday, CPS said they received phone calls from the infant's alleged relatives. A CPS spokeswoman confirmed the infant is being checked out at a local hospital before a court hearing scheduled for tomorrow.

Under the Moses Law, post offices are not considered 'safe havens'. The mother of the infant can be charged once identified.
