Yale Street Bridge has been completed over White Oak Bayou

HOUSTON -- The Yale Street Bridge at White Oak Bayou is back open and earlier than anticipated.

It was supposed to be completed late this year, but the Texas Department of Transportation has reopened the bridge just before the super bowl.

"Through resourceful coordination between TxDOT and the contractor on this project, the citizens of the Heights community and those that traverse this area will now have a brand new bridge earlier than anticipated," said Quincy Allen, TxDOT Houston District Engineer. "This is a great example of all stakeholders working together and we are especially thankful to have this bridge open in advance of the Super Bowl."

The original bridge, which was built in 1931, had to replaced to meet current safety standards.

The new $2.8 million bridge includes features classic lighting poles and concrete railing.

Metal railing also had to be added to be in compliance with current safety standards.
