Street racing may be to blame for a violent wreck on the Gulf Freeway

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A major wreck shut down the Gulf Freeway just before the 610 Loop for most of the morning rush hour.

The accident involved two cars. One of them was damaged so severely that the jaws of life had to be used to get the two people in the car free.

We are being told this may have been a case of two cars racing down the Gulf Freeway.

One car hit another and that's what started the accident.

Houston police say two people tried to run away on foot. They were quickly taken into custody and are being questioned by police.

The accident shut down the Gulf Freeway for hours.

As for the two people in the damaged car, they were taken to the Texas Medical Center. We do not know their condition, but firefighters say they had to use the jaws of life to get those victims out of the car.
