HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The soul-food restaurant made famous by the reality TV show Welcome to Sweetie Pies on the Oprah Winfrey Network is coming to Houston. According to the Houston Business Journal, Sweetie Pie's will open its first location in 2017. The restaurant will be located west of The Loop on Richmond.
Reality TV star and founder of Sweetie Pie's, Robbie Montgomery or "Miss Robbie," opened the first Sweetie Pie's restaurant with her son, James "Tim" Norman, in 1996. The original Sweetie Pie's is located in the north St. Louis suburban community of Dellwood. A second location in The Grove neighborhood of central St. Louis City opened in 2006.
According to Sweetie Pie's website, "Miss Robbie" started her career as a backup singer with Ike Turner and a young Anna Mae Bullock, who was soon to become Tina Turner. "A Fool In Love" became Ike and Tina Turner's first big hit, and Robbie joined them on the road as an "Ikette." While on the road, Robbie's skills in the kitchen were coveted by fellow tour members, and she often prepared meals for the band on hot plates in hotel rooms.
After touring as an "Ikette," "Miss Robbie" continued her music career until she developed a lung condition which ended her music career. However, "Miss Robbie" pursued her love of cooking full-time and eventually opened Sweetie Pie's.
