Man drowns while fishing in a river in Montgomery County, authorities say

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A 33-year-old man is dead after authorities said he drowned while fishing in the river in Montgomery County.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, on Sunday, deputies received a call at 6:18 p.m. regarding a possible drowning in a river near Hill Road and Sorters Road.

Authorities said the caller told them 33-year-old Jose Negrete had been fishing in the river when he was overcome by the current and struggled to swim to safety. Multiple people who were with Negrete tried to help him from the shoreline but their efforts were unsuccessful.

A search was conducted in the area, and Negrete was found 50 feet from the shoreline.

An investigation was conducted, and authorities said that at this time, this appears to be a tragic accident and there are no indications of any criminal acts related to this death.
