HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Some Harris County families sweating through the Houston summer heat without air conditioning got some help staying cool.

They picked up free portable air conditioning units at a distribution at Bayland Community Center in Gulfton, according to Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones.

"Heat kills. Relief should not be a luxury when our families are struggling with the affordability of rent and groceries," Briones said. "Some of our community members here in Harris County do not have air conditioning. This is a step forward."

The distribution is part of the second annual “Cool 4 the Summer” program organized by Briones' office.

The recipients included seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and low-income families, according to Precinct 4.

Commissioner Briones said 300 A/C units were distributed at three sites in her precinct.
