Houston officials discuss World Cup security plan ahead of first match

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We are just a week away from the World Cup kick-off, and starting on Thursday, NRG Stadium, which will be known as "Houston Stadium," will be under a full security lockdown.

The video above is from a previous report.

The City of Houston said there will be an enhanced perimeter around the stadium, and FIFA will set up an 8-foot-high "anti-climb" concrete reinforced fence.

The safety efforts won't stop at the gates.

"The mayor mentioned the drone operations. We do have those kinds of things involved," Houston Police Department Chief Noe Diaz said.

Officials aren't sharing specifics about their drone security strategy, but they said specialized training and equipment are in place.

There will also be screening locations for fans.

The first match in Houston will be played on June 14, and the city will host seven matches in total.
