Small Business Saturday: How to 'shop small' in the Houston area

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Mom-and-pop businesses across Texas hope a strong holiday season will help them recover from a brutal fall.

Storms, flooding, and tornadoes damaged many buildings in our state. Even businesses which weren't damaged felt the effect of bad weather on their sales.

In San Marcos, most stores had to close for a day. Store owners hope their neighbors come out to support them today.

Chloe Ashley, the manager of clothing store, said, "I think the money you spend at their stores goes a lot further than most corporate stores does."

Leanne Latham, a candy shop owner, said, "You're helping put food on your neighbors table, or put their kid into soccer practice."

Nationwide, shoppers spent more than $14 billion at independent businesses last small business Saturday.

In Houston, there are dozens of shops and restaurants participating. That includes Cactus Music, Brazos Books, Murder by the Book, both Nan's and Third Planet Comics, and Goode Company Barbeque and much more.
