HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities say a barricaded suspect was shot by police at a southwest Houston apartment complex on Monday.
The Houston Police Department said the shooting happened in the 2400 block of I-610 South Loop West, near Kirby and NRG Park.
According to HPD Asst. Chief Bashir, officers received a call about a suspicious person with a weapon at the Alegria Apartments at about 7 a.m.
When they arrived, officers reportedly met with a security guard who told them the suspect had pointed a weapon at him. Bashir said the security guard then, in return, pepper-sprayed the suspect, before the suspect went into a vacant apartment.
"The officers made their way to that apartment and made verbal contact with the suspect while he barricaded himself inside that location," Bashir added. "The officer continued to give verbal commands, and at some point during the encounter, the suspect -- he breaks the window inside the apartment and extends his hand out with what appeared to be a weapon."
That's when police said officers fired at the suspect and told him to come out. HPD said the suspect surrendered about five minutes later and did have injuries.
"Officers immediately started providing first aid, and later he was transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition but is expected to survive," Bashir said.
The suspect has not been identified, but was described as a Black man in his 40s. Police said they believe the suspect was not a resident and was trespassing. However, an investigation into the incident is still underway.
Officials added that there have been previous arrests involving the suspect, though no additional details were provided.
HPD said thankfully, no one else was injured in the shooting.
