HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A 5-year-old girl died Friday morning after drowning in a swimming pool at a west Houston apartment complex.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to the 3100 block of Hayes Road around midnight after a resident discovered the child.
Police said that the resident, who was swimming when they made the discovery, attempted to aid the child.
"The Houston Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced the child deceased," HPD Lt. A. Khan said.
Khan said it is unknown how long the child had been in the water before being found by that resident.
"Our homicide division will be doing the investigation on this," she said. "Thoughts and prayers to the family of the child."
HPD states that the child lived at the complex in a unit that faces the swimming area.
Investigators interviewed the family and learned through surveillance video that the child left her residence and accessed the pool area.
Officials said there does not appear to be any signs of foul play at this time.
