LEAGUE CITY, Texas (KTRK) -- A mailman is behind bars after he allegedly stole the very correspondence he was supposed to deliver.

According to the League City Police Department, 46-year-old Richard Ybanez of Bacliff was taken into custody on Thursday following an investigation into the suspected mail theft.

Investigators with League City and the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General received a tip about Ybanez about a week ago. Detectives now say he's been charged with mail theft of 10 to 30 items, adding that his bond was set at $5,000.

Video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the moments the postman was arrested at a League City gas station in front of a USPS vehicle.

13 Investigates found that in Galveston County, at least 13 cases of mail theft by employees were reported from January 2021 to February 2026.

LCPD said that the investigation remains ongoing.
