Security guard shot, hospitalized after robbery at ATM: Conroe PD

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- Police said a security guard was rushed to the hospital after being shot in an armed robbery on Monday at a drive-thru ATM in Conroe.

According to the Conroe Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call about a welfare check at a Bank of America ATM in the 1900 block of North Frazier Street at about 8:20 a.m. on Monday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a Brinks security guard with gunshot wounds to his torso, according to officials.

The victim, identified as 59-year-old Quang Truong, was then taken by first responders to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing surgery, authorities said.

Just minutes before Truong was shot, Cathy Bunn had pulled up to the ATM and had a brief conversation with him.

"He asked if we were okay. And I said 'Yes,' and he said he's actually going to service the machine, and it would be like 45 minutes to an hour," recalled Bunn. "And I said, 'Oh, okay, I'll just take my friend to the actual Bank of America bank.' I said, 'Be safe, look at your surroundings and be careful.'"

As officers were securing the scene, they said they received tracking locations of money boxes that were stolen from the ATM.

ABC13 obtained surveillance video from a nearby business, which shows a light colored truck pull up alongside the ATM, then a person getting out. That person walks over to the ATM for a minute, walks back to the truck, and drives off.

Officers said they were able to locate the suspect's vehicle, a grey Dodge pickup, on I-45 traveling northbound.

Conroe PD said that officers, with assistance from Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Public Safety, attempted to make a felony traffic stop on the pickup near the 5000 block of I-45, just south of FM 830.

Before officers approached the pickup, the suspect turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head, according to police. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Authorities said they are not releasing the name of the 41-year-old suspect due to the current nature of the investigation.

Officials said they believe the money was recovered as they continue to investigate the suspect's vehicle.

Conroe PD said the investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and the FBI.
