HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A man was sentenced to 58 years behind bars on Wednesday after being convicted of running over and killing a Nassau Bay officer in 2019, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

On Sept. 4, a jury found Tavores Henderson guilty of aggravated assault in the death of 43-year-old Nassau Bay police Sgt. Kaila Sullivan nearly six years ago.

Investigators say Henderson hit the sergeant with his car after he escaped arrest during a traffic stop at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Sebastian Court around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2019.

Henderson was wanted on a Harris County warrant for assault on a family member, police said. While trying to arrest him, police said he fought with officers and was able to break free, re-enter the vehicle, and hit the sergeant as he drove away.

Kaila Sullivan was taken to HCA Clear Lake Hospital by ambulance, where she died.

Henderson was originally tried for murder, but was found guilty of a lesser offense.

"He didn't have to take her," Kaila Sullivan's wife, Tracey Sullivan, told the Harris County District Attorney's Office. "One day he'll have to pay for that-when he meets his maker."
