Trial for Chambers Co. woman accused of killing 5th husband begins

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Jury selection begins for Sarah Hartsfield, the Chambers County woman accused of killing her fifth husband, Monday morning.

This case garnered national attention because of Sarah's past.

In 2018, she was investigated for killing her fiancé at the time in Minnesota. A grand jury decided it was self-defense, but after what came to light in Chambers County, that case was reopened.

During interviews with ABC13, former husbands and partners have described alleged patterns of abuse and threats.

As for this case, Hartsfield is accused of killing her husband of 11 months, Joseph Hartsfield, whom she said she met online.

He reportedly died from complications of the toxic effects of insulin in 2023.

Eyewitness News has the latest developments in a so-called "black widow" murder case involving a Chambers County woman accused of killing her fifth husband.

Court documents show he had diabetes and had a dangerous drop in his blood sugar before becoming unconscious.

An affidavit revealed Sarah told investigators that she waited an hour to call 911 for help, though she later denied saying that. She's maintained she's not to blame, saying that diabetes is an "individual responsibility".

As for the trial, the judge decided that cameras would be allowed in the courtroom, but with no audio except for the closing and the verdict.

Attorneys tell ABC13 that they expect the trial to last about two weeks.
