HPD video shows officers shoot and kill a southwest Houston man

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- It's now been two months since a southwest Houston man was shot and killed by Houston Police Department officers in his doorway after his own family called 911, asking for help.

According to HPD, the shooting happened at 11:20 a.m. on April 1 at an apartment complex in the 6300 block of West Belfort Avenue.

The family of Shahzad Gaziani addressed reporters in front of the federal courthouse on Monday.

Relatives said his wife called police, saying he was bipolar and not taking his prescribed medication.

"There has been a call made before to 311 and 911 before. He has been taken to the mental hospital. That's one of the biggest reasons why she thought she would receive help," Gaziani's sister said.

One month after the shooting, HPD released video from the body cameras officers were wearing.

In the video, you can see officers arriving, then his wife and mother leaving the apartment. The video shows Gaziani opening the door, then shutting it. You can hear him screaming, then he opens the door again, holding what relatives now say is a kitchen knife. Police told him to put down the knife, but he didn't. According to police, three officers then shoot, killing him.

"Why would we have to execute him? He only has a knife," Ben Crump, the family's attorney, said. "It was this family today. If we don't do something about this, it will be your family tomorrow."

HPD and the Harris County District Attorney's office said the shooting is still under investigation.

Gaziani's family said they will consider pursuing a lawsuit against the city, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
