Future of 17 underperforming HISD schools in limbo

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The future of 17 HISD schools is in limbo after they have failed to meet state academic standards for two years in a row.

The Texas Education Agency requires each school that lags behind academically to submit a plan of improvement by July. HISD Superintendent Terry Grier presented a plan in conjunction with the schools administration last week. The improvements included the removal of some principals and teachers and the addition of social workers who can work with the students and their families to meet their needs.

But the school board refused to pass the measure, questioning Dr. Grier's proposed improvements. The board is expected to vote for a second time in a special meeting Thursday afternoon.
