HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Eight families are displaced after a fire damaged their southwest Houston apartments.

The fire started around 6:30pm last night at an apartment complex between Welch and Indiana streets. Four units are destroyed, and four other units sustained smoke and water damage.

Houston Fire Department Captain Chris Oliver said the fire appears to be electrical in nature.

"The initial units when we arrived on scene had heavy fire coming out of the back side," Oliver said, "Initially, the fire was knocked down, but then spread to other units through some void spaces in the complex."

The Red Cross is assisting affected residents by providing blankets, food and hotel rooms for the night. If you want to help the fire victims, you can do so by clicking/tapping here.
