Driver rear-ended and killed at stop light, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A driver died after being rear-ended while stopped at a red light by a speeding driver, according to police.

Officers were called to West Bellfort near the West Sam Houston Tollway around 3 a.m. Saturday.

The impact was so severe, the rear-ended vehicle was left unrecognizable, police said.

"As of right now, we are unable to identify the vehicle because of the damage to it," said Sgt. M. Sudduth with the Houston Police Department. "That's the the vehicle the decedent is in."

The other vehicle was a Volkswagen sedan, according to Sudduth.

He said the Volkswagen's driver was under investigation for possible intoxication but didn't elaborate.

Except for the drivers, no one else was inside either vehicle, according to police.

Officers haven't said if the Volkswagen's driver was injured in the crash.

West Bellfort reopened around 7 a.m. Saturday.
