Disturbance at high school football game in SE Houston sends people running from stands

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police responded to an incident that broke out at Barnett Stadium during a high school football game in southeast Houston on Friday evening.

HPD confirmed a fight sent people running from the stands and onto the field during the Yates vs. Madison game.

Lt. Larry Crowson told Eyewitness News there was "stomping" on the metal bleachers which people thought were gunshots. He said no weapons or shell casings were found.

Crowson said several other fights broke out during the chaos. He said nobody was taken to the hospital.

Players from both schools were seen shaking hands after the game was called.

HISD sent out the following statement.

"During last night's football game at Barnett Stadium, an incident occurred just before halftime when a group of students rushed onto the field. During the commotion, coaches and administrators directed athletes, band members, and spirit teams to safety after a report was made that shots may have been fired. Law enforcement and stadium staff quickly secured the area, and fans were directed to leave the stadium."

"Following a thorough review, officials confirmed that no shots were fired, and no arrests were made. HISD police assumed control of the situation, and administrators from Yates and Madison High Schools worked to account for all students."

"The game was ultimately canceled. HISD is grateful for the swift actions of our coaches, administrators, and law enforcement officers who ensured the safety of our students and fans."
