Deputies who shot and killed knife-wielding man were part of extra patrols, METRO says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities are investigating after a police officer shot and killed a man at the METRO Northline Transit Center on Fulton on Wednesday evening.

The Houston Police Department is the lead on the investigation. They say two Harris County Sheriff's deputies shot a man who exposed himself on a train, and then cut one of the deputies with a knife.

METRO confirms the deputies were working at the site as part of METRO's Safety Partnership Initiative to keep riders safe. Something that was put in place after several violent incidents over the past few months.

On Thursday afternoon, METRO confirms with ABC13 that the deputies involved in Wednesday night's shooting will not be patrolling for METRO while the investigation is underway.

ABC13 spoke with people who said they're grateful for the increased law enforcement presence in the area.

Rosa Rodriguez has owned a business near Fulton Street for 20 years and says last night someone asked her if the sounds were fireworks, but she knew immediately they were gunshots and closed up shop for the night.

Law enforcement says deputies shot the man after they say he pulled a knife and cut one of the deputies on the hand.

METRO says they have added 58 local area law enforcement to help patrol and address safety concerns on buses and METRO rails in our city.

Rodriguez says a METRO PD substation recently went up on Fulton Street, and that the visibility is helping a lot with crime.

METRO PD says they are already seeing the benefit of having area law enforcement help them. They say they're seeing improved visibility and faster response times.

HCSO confirms that both deputies are 6- and 9-year veterans of the department have been placed on administrative leave.

HPD is not saying how old or who the man was that was killed, while they await making next of kin notifications.
