HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Charges have been dropped against a Houston neurosurgeon who had been accused of over-injecting a patient with lidocaine, according to court documents.

The charges against Dr. Samer ElFallal were filed in December 2024. At the time, an investigation conducted by the Harris County District Attorney's Office found that the patient experienced severe adverse effects after being injected by Dr. ElFallal.

Authorities said ElFallal treated patients at HCA Houston Healthcare hospitals until March 2024.

Recently updated documents stated the charges were dropped against him because the "statute of limitations ran out."

Lidocaine is a local anesthetic commonly used to treat pain, but it can also be administered in topical form.

Dr. ElFallal told ABC13 he voluntarily ceased practice after the allegations surfaced.
