BELLAIRE, Texas (KTRK) -- Bellaire Police Chief Onesimo Lopez has retired after an internal investigation that placed him on paid administrative leave for several weeks, city officials said.

In a statement Friday night, the City of Bellaire announced Lopez's retirement and thanked him for serving the community for the past seven years, including five as Chief of Police.

ABC13 first reported on the internal investigation that began on Nov. 20. Sources said it was initiated after Lopez reportedly contacted an outside agency to investigate some of his command staff.

City officials told Eyewitness News on Wednesday that the internal review involving Lopez was complete and the findings were discussed with him. An email obtained by Eyewitness News showed that the city manager informed the police department of the retirement on Friday evening.

In the meantime, the city said Lt. Shane O'Sullivan will serve as acting police chief as it begins its search for a new chief in the coming weeks.

Officials said the Bellaire Police Department remains fully operational and is committed to providing the highest level of service:

"Public safety continues to be a top priority, and residents can be assured that the department's dedication to professionalism and community protection remains strong," the statement read.
