Nativity outrage: Alabama town threatened with lawsuit over religious scene

RAINBOW CITY, AL (KTRK) -- A nativity scene is causing a big uproar in Rainbow City, AL, after a national group asked the city to take it down.

But the city is not budging.

Mayor Terry Calhoun said, "As long as I am mayor, I'm going to do what I think is right and I'm not moving that manger scene."

Turns out the Freedom from Religion Foundation sent a letter to him, saying the display violated court rulings over separation of church and state. And it could file a lawsuit.

But those who live in the town say they're willing to take a risk and keep the religious scene.

One woman said, "God paid it for us, so I'm willing to pay it for him. I think there's some things worth taking a stand for."

So far, no lawsuit has been filed.

A spokesperson for the Freedom from Religion Foundation says the government is not supposed to have an official religion.
