BRAZORIA COUNTY. Texas (KTRK) -- Two inmates were rushed to the hospital after a stabbing at the C.T. Terrell Unit prison, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson confirmed.

It started as an altercation that broke out during a religious service in the gymnasium and ended in a stabbing involving five inmates, according to TDCJ spokesperson Amanda Hernandez.

While a total of three inmates sustained puncture wounds, Hernandez said two of them required medical attention outside the prison.

Officials did not say how the altercation broke out, nor did they say what was used to inflict stab wounds.

TDCJ confirmed all inmates were in stable condition and that an investigation is underway.

The C.T. Terrell Unit is a prison near Rosharon, Texas, in Brazoria County, and it holds over 1,500 inmates, according to the TDCJ website.
