MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Deputies say a man in prison is charged with helping lead a criminal scheme involving a fake business in Conroe.
Investigators in the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office say they were able to recover more than a hundred thousand dollars in stolen vehicles and vehicle parts in connection with this case.
There are more than 60 pages of court documents detailing the fraud allegations. A criminal affidavit states that Jason Mott is accused of making calls to his son from prison, where investigators say he detailed his plans.
Investigators say Jason Mott was calling the shots while serving time for check theft at the prison in Beeville, which is northwest of Corpus.
Investigators say in recorded phone conversations with his 21-year-old son Devin, he would give him direction on how to conduct check and bank fraud, along with directing him to launch a fake business called Underground Performance with a fake address.
Court documents show Jason was offering stolen vehicles from other cities to family members of other prison inmates for $20,000. Police say those family members were unaware that the cars had been stolen from other cities.
Police say the victims thought Devin Mott held a dealer's license and would acquire auction vehicles at discounted prices.
After months of investigating, the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force, along with other agencies, executed a search warrant at the home of Devin's grandparents on a quiet county road and his apartment at Harper's Retreat.
Investigators say they recovered more than a hundred thousand dollars in stolen vehicles and parts along with two firearms.
Investigators say a third suspect, Chadrick Ellison Craft, is accused of presenting fraudulent checks to a clerk in order to take out a loan.
According to court documents, three men are accused of engaging in the sale of stolen vehicles, stolen motors, and printing fictitious checks under a fake business name and address.
Two women are listed in the charging documents, who are accused of playing a role in the scheme. ABC13 is not naming them at this time because they have not been charged yet.
