HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- All southbound lanes along the East Loop have reopened after police say a deadly crash involving an 18-wheeler happened on Wednesday morning.
Houston TranStar reported the wreck at about 7:40 a.m. along I-610 southbound before Clinton Drive.
According to Capt. Donna Crawford of the Houston Police Department, it appears the driver of the 18-wheeler was run over by his own truck following a mechanical failure.
"The driver pulled to the side of the road to address the issue, and unfortunately, while he was doing so, the vehicle rolled over him," Capt. Crawford said.
Crawford added that another motorist witnessed the accident and pulled over to render aid, but it was too late.
Houston TranStar reported all southbound lanes closed for over two hours while the medical examiner conducted their investigation with the help of a heavy duty wrecker.
Crawford urged all drivers experiencing a mechanical issue to pull over and, if possible, stay inside your vehicle and call for help.
