HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- One person was killed, and two children were hospitalized after a crash in west Harris County on Sunday evening, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.

The driver, identified as Jessica Esparza, had a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl in the car when she drove off the roadway and crashed in a parking lot at about 6:25 p.m., deputies said.

Investigators said Esparza was driving a gold 2008 Kia Rio northbound in the 4600 block of Highway 6 North and failed to stay in a single lane. She drove northeast off the roadway and into a private parking lot, where she struck a concrete pillar, deputies said.

According to authorities, a witness said they saw the Kia going at a high rate of speed before the crash.

Esparza was confirmed dead at the scene, and the boy and girl were taken to a hospital by LifeFlight with life-threatening injuries, HCSO said.

Authorities said the crash remains under investigation.
