HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man wanted for robbery and assault was fatally shot by officers during a confrontation in north Harris County.

Authorities were conducting surveillance at a residence and followed a car that left the home to a food mart in the 1200 block of East Airtex.

As the driver got out of her vehicle, officers approached her to ask information about a suspect who was wanted on charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

"While talking to the female, the officers observed movement in the back of the vehicle, where the suspect was hiding with a young child," a Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman said. "As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect exited the vehicle with a weapon drawn, pointed it at the officers."

The spokesman said that's when authorities opened fire, striking the suspect several times. He was declared dead at the scene.

Several agencies, including the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force, were involved in the shooting.

Officials are not yet releasing the suspect's name, nor the names of the officers involved in the shooting.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is still investigating.
